How We Identified True Data Centre Utilisation of 2% and a Cost Reduction Opportunity of £60 Million per Annum

The data centres are used by organisations to host the bulk of their IT equipment. The data centres of large organisations are extensive and consume significant of amounts of energy and cost. Anecdotally, data centres are underutilised, however conventional methodologies used to quantify data centre utilisation are flawed.

We devised a methodology to measure the true utilisation of data centres. Applying this methodology to two of our clients we found that data centre utilisation was as low as 2% at peak. Using our clients’ data, we found that conventional methodologies overstated of utilisation by up to 6-times, negating the business case for data centre consolidation.

The methodology extends to measure the cost reduction opportunity through consolidation. For one client, a cost reduction opportunity of £60 million per annum was identified.
